If you need help now...
If you need information or assistance for yourself, your family, or a friend, here's a list of national hotlines you can call. These lines are staffed by trained counselors and caring volunteers who will help you find the information and resources you need to deal with your situation. Except where noted, these numbers are toll free, so you won't be charged for the call and it won't show up on your phone bill. Don't hesitate to call if you need help that's what these numbers are for!

HIV/AIDS Treatment Information Service

This hotline offers information on federally approved guidelines for the treatment of HIV and AIDS.


National AIDS Hotline
1-800-CDCINFO (232-4636)
This 24-hour hotline, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), provides information on AIDS and its prevention, local testing facilities and medications for treatment.
Separate number for Spanish speakers: 1-800-344-7432, 8 am to 7 pm

Project Information National AIDS/HIV Treatment Hotline
1-800-822-7422 (hours: Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm; Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm, Pacific Time)
This California-based hotline is staffed by trained counselors and offers information on AIDS/HIV treatment and prevention.


Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc.
1-888-4AL-ANON (1-888-425-2666) (hours: Monday-Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, Eastern time)
This hotline offers assistance to alcoholics and their families, providing locations and times for Al-Anon (adult) and Alateen (younger family members) meetings worldwide.
Spanish and French language options available.

Marijuana Anonymous World Services

This 24-hour hotline provides information about marijuana use and abuse as well as referrals to local meetings. Visit their website at www.marijuana-anonymous.org

National Drug and Alcohol Treatment Hotline
1-800-662-HELP (1-800-662-4357)
This 24-hour hotline provides information on alcohol and drug abuse, with a staff of trained counselors and referral service for local treatment options. Spanish language option available.

This 24-hour hotline, run by the non-profit group ChildHelpUSA, offers crisis counseling on sexual abuse, domestic violence, rape, and missing children, including information and referrals for treatment programs, shelters, and legal assistance.

National Domestic Violence Hotline

Separate number for the Hearing Impaired: 1-800-787-3224
This 24 hour hotline provides crisis counseling and local referrals for shelters and transitional housing for victims of domestic violence. Spanish language option available.

This 24-hour hotline provides crisis intervention, referral and information services to homeless, runaway and other troubled youth and their families.

National Runaway Switchboard and Suicide Hotline
1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929)
This 24-hour hotline provides crisis counseling for troubled teens, including information on various programs for runaways, such as free bus rides home.

Eating Disorders

EDAP - Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention
1-800-931-2237 (Hours: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm daily, Pacific time)
Trained EDAP staff members answer questions about eating disorders, offer support for addressing food and body image issues, and provide treatment and counseling referrals by mail or fax. See myneda.org for more information.

The Renfrew Center
1-800-RENFREW (1-800-736-3739) (hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm, Eastern time)
The Renfrew Center is a women's mental health center that specializes in the treatment of eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating), trauma, anxiety, depression, substance abuse and other women's issues. This hotline provides information and referrals to eating disorder specialists within the US and Canada.

WINS - Women Insisting on Natural Shapes
1-800-600-WINS (1-800-600-9467)
This non-profit organization is dedicated to educating adults and children about the dangers of excessive dieting and eating disorders by promoting normal, healthy body images.

This national, non-profit organization is dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults with learning disabilities by providing information, resources, and referral services with its hotline; developing and supporting innovative educational programs, seminars, and workshops; conducting a public awareness campaign; and advocating for more effective policies and legislation.

America's Crisis Pregnancy Hotline

This national hotline provides counseling and information regarding pregnancy options; although the counselors do not provide direct referrals to abortion service providers, they will provide referrals to non-profit organizations and community resources.

This automated directory provides a listing of doctors, hospitals and family planning clinics that provide emergency contraception options.

The Independent Adoption Center

This hotline is staffed by trained counselors for anonymous discussions of adoption options as well as referrals to local resources.

National Abortion Federation Hotline

1-800-772-9100 (hours: Monday to Friday, 9 am to 7 pm, Eastern time)
This hotline provides referrals to local abortion service providers, as well as information on emergency contraception and state abortion laws and legislation.

National Adoption Center

This national, nonprofit organization is dedicated to expanding adoption opportunities in the United States, with a focus on minority and special needs children. The hotline offers information and resources on a wide variety of topics related to pregnancy, adoption and childcare.

Sexuality

National Gay and Lesbian Hotline

This hotline is staffed by trained volunteers who offer counseling services and referrals specific to the gay and lesbian community.


Gay and Lesbian Helpline of Fenway Community Health Center

1-888-340-GLBT (1-888-340-4528 - hours: Monday-Friday, 6 pm to 11 pm; Saturday, 5 pm to 7:30 pm ; Sunday, 5 pm to 10 pm, Eastern time)
The Gay and Lesbian Helpline provides free and confidential information, referrals, crisis intervention, and support to callers seven evenings a week.

Peer Listening Line of Fenway Community Health Center
1-800-399-PEER (1-800-399-7337)
The Peer Listening Line provides an anonymous and confidential forum where young people can get help, information, referrals, and support for a range of issues. Young people up to about 23 years of age can talk to a peer without being judged or rushed into any decision they are not prepared to make. Issues include sexuality and safer sex practices, coming out, HIV and AIDS, depression and suicide, and anti-gay/lesbian harassment and violence.

This 24-hour crisis hotline is staffed by trained counselors who offer support to gay and lesbian youth on everything from coming out to suicide.

This civil rights organization's principal objective is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens and eliminate racial prejudice in the nation. This is not a toll free number.

The Office of Minority Health Resource Center
1-800-444-6472 (hours: Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, Eastern time)
This federal agency's mission is to improve the health of racial and ethnic populations through the development of effective health policies and programs that help to eliminate disparities. The hotline provides information and resources on public health issues affecting American Indians and Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders, Blacks/African Americans, and Hispanics/Latinos.
